AI, Law and Media Innovation

Project Duration: 2026

Funder: The Helsinki Sanomat Foundation

Project Lead: Aalto University

Project Budget: EUR 90,000

Participating researcher: Juho Lindman

Research team led by Professor Matti Rossi, with research team members including Juho Lindman and others, will conduct a multidisciplinary study examining the impact of artificial intelligence on journalism and media. The project addresses how AI search engines threaten journalism’s fundamental role by redirecting reader traffic and advertising revenue while separating journalistic facts from their original context and fact-checking. This development impacts not only media business models but also journalism’s societal role in maintaining democracy, as it reduces citizens’ ability to assess the credibility of information. The research will compare regulatory approaches to AI in media. By analyzing regulatory frameworks, industry self-regulation, and organizational practices, the study aims to produce practical recommendations to help Finnish media companies adapt to different regulatory environments. The final report will include actionable insights on editorial practices, self-regulation, and education to help the media sector maintain journalistic standards in the AI era.

The grant will fund Juho Lindman’s sabbatical at Harvard University in 2026.
