The WAISE project presented its latest progress at the bi-annual Software Center Reporting Workshop, held in Gothenburg. The project investigates whether widely adopted software development metrics remain relevant in the era of GenAI, and how GenAI affects both coding and non-coding tasks performed by software developers. As GenAI tools become increasingly integrated into software engineering workflows, understanding their impact on productivity, collaboration, and established development metrics is becoming increasingly important.
At the workshop, Vasili Mankevich presented findings from the first sprint of the project. During the first six months, the WAISE research team reviewed recent literature on software development metrics, created and tested a daily diary instrument for collecting data on developers’ use of GenAI in their work, and analyzed early data gathered with the instrument.
In the next phase, the project will expand its data collection efforts and produce a comprehensive report on how software developers use GenAI in both coding and non-coding activities.
WAISE is currently working with Grundfos as the main industry partner, with Volvo Cars, Zenseact, and Axis Communications participating as observing partners.
