We are excited to announce the launch of Futures With(out) Work (FWork) based at the University of Gothenburg, a bold new research initiative that explores possible amidst of technological and societal developments and tries to find how to bring the best one to reality. We’re looking beyond conventional themes to envision and help create better futures for everyone.
What sets us apart is from more traditional future of work research is our focus on speculative futures, and an emphasis on studying a proactive role of diverse stakeholders in shaping the future with or without work. We believe that by bringing together diverse voices – from workers to industry leaders, policymakers to technologists – we can collectively build more positive futures, whether they center on traditional notions of work or embrace radical new paradigms.
Our Team
We are a friendly team of six researchers who combine academic excellence with real-world impact. Our team brings together expertise in digitalization, work systems design, and advanced computational methods, complemented by deep understanding of social dynamics, and policy. This multidisciplinary foundation enables us to tackle complex challenges from multiple angles, always with an eye toward practical, ethical, and sustainable solutions.
Research Focus
Our research is underpinned by big technological trends including generative AI, algorithmic management, decentralized organizations, emerging work models and platformization of employment among others. Our research examines how such trends are reshaping the workplace. We explore five interconnected themes that will define the futures with(out) work:
- Responsible Technologies at Work: Ensuring that AI, automation, and digital tools enhance rather than diminish human potential
- Innovative Digital Work Design: Creating new models of work that promote both productivity and well-being
- Datafication of Work: Understanding and shaping how data transforms work practices and organizations
- Democratization of Work: Expanding participation in decision-making and benefits sharing
- Future Work Paradigms: Reimagining what “work” means in an era of rapid technological and social change
Looking Forward
In the coming year, we’re focused on three key objectives:
- Building and expanding networks across academia and industry
- Developing research infrastructure to support innovative research and education
- Creating frameworks for impactful collaboration
